Police were out in force on Ouse Bridge yesterday evening as the city centre was busy with racegoers, students, local residents and visitors celebrating the start of the weekend.
Three police vans were seen on the south side of the bridge.
North Yorkshire Police have yet to say why they sent so many vehicles and officers to the scene at 8.40pm. The bridge remained open throughout the incident.
At the time, the city centre was full of racegoers who had attended the last Friday meet of the season at the Knavesmire.
There were also large numbers of students as well as York residents and others enjoying the city's nightlife.
