Cheese shop celebrates one-year anniversary with day of celebrations

AN INDEPENDENT cheese shop has marked its first anniversary with a day of celebrations.

Riddle and Rind, located on Main Street in Haworth, celebrates its one-year anniversary today (Saturday).

The shop is run by Hayley Smith and Michael Shaw, who decided to open after plans for a different business fell through.

'We are both big cheese buffs so it was the obvious choice'

Ms Smith said: "Originally, we were looking to purchase a building to put some themed escape rooms in, all to do with Haworth – 1940s espionage, steampunk, The Railway Children and things like that.

"We found the building, but didn’t want to put an escape room on street level as it would spoil the look of the street.

"So we looked for something else to put in it.

Ms Smith said: "We are both big cheese buffs, so it was the obvious choice – Riddle for the escape room, and Rind for the cheese.

"Except we didn’t get planning for the escape room!

"But we will adapt and survive."

'This year seems to have flown by'

Their first year in business has gone quickly, Ms Smith said.

She said: "This year seems to have flown by.

"Haworth is a very community-based village, and we like to be involved as much as we can."

"There are so many different facets to Haworth, and we seem to run from one event to the other.

"This weekend is our anniversary, but it's also the Steampunk Weekend and it's also Stilton Week."

Proceeds will go towards local hospice

To mark the anniversary, the Ms Smith and Mr Shaw have organised a day of activities, with proceeds going towards Manorlands Hospice in Keighley.

Ms Smith said: "We have lots of fun events - spin the wheel, taste testers, golden tickets, and a huge hamper raffle in aid of the Manorlands Hospice."

"The prizes will be donated by ourselves and all proceeds will go the Manorlands."

'We'd love to expand to offer a dedicated cheese cafe'

Looking ahead, the pair hope to expand the business.

Ms Smith said: "We are hoping to get our downstairs extended underground to be able to offer a dedicated cheese cafe, with proper cheesecakes, cheese scones and pie.

"We'd also like to be able to offer tasting sessions, cheese and wine events, cheese-themed murder mystery evenings and much more."
