Traffic restrictions on a busy County Durham route have been made permanent, according to a public notice.

Durham County Council said the experimental order covering the A1018 and B1404 Seaton Lane, in force since October 14, 2024, will now be permanent.

The order follows a trial conducted under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

From October 7, the changes ban entry at some points and impose a 50mph limit on parts of the A1018.

The order also bans right and left turns from the A1018 link road into a field access 555 metres north of the B1404 overbridge.

Some exemptions will apply.

The council made the decision after assessing the trial, which was introduced to manage traffic and improve road safety.

The council has invited the public to inspect the order.

A copy of the order is available at Seaham Library during opening hours and on the council’s website.

The council has opened a six-week window for anyone to challenge the order or any of its provisions.

A challenge must be made to the High Court on the grounds that the order exceeds the powers granted by the Road Traffic Regulation Act or that the Act’s requirements were not followed.
