Families are being invited to discover the joys of reading as they explore the North East coast this autumn.

Look for the Book takes place in Sunderland on October 10 as part of a wider reading initiative linked to the National Year of Reading and World Mental Health Day.

Roberta Redecke, head of business services at Sunderland’s BIDs, said: "The Little Libraries started with a really simple conversation with our Seafront Volunteer Group: what little things could we introduce that would make spending time at the coast even better?

"The response has been wonderful.

"Books are moving between people, new books are appearing and the libraries are being genuinely used.

"Look for the Book is about building on that.

"We are encouraging people to come for a walk, discover a book, have a chat, stop for a cuppa and perhaps take ten minutes just for themselves to read by the sea."

The event runs from 10am to noon along the coast between Roker and Seaburn, with a book hunt linking four Little Library sites: The Seaburn Inn, the Tram Shelter, Adventure Sunderland and the Marina.

Anyone who finds a hidden book can take it home, read it and pass it on.

The morning also includes live theatre, book swaps and a community book project.

Atlas Theatre Company will become temporary bookkeepers at the Little Libraries, bringing theatre to conversations about books. Sunderland Literacy Aid will run pop-up stalls at Fausto and The Seaburn Inn, where people can choose or exchange books and chat about reading.

Visitors can add words, thoughts and drawings from the day to a community book.

The finished book will be displayed at Fullwell Library and the Culture House.

WTTB, an online digital printing company, is sponsoring printed copies for the Little Libraries.

The event supports the National Literacy Trust campaign urging everyone to read for 10 minutes at 10am on October 10.

Little Libraries are part of a growing movement to make books more accessible in public spaces.

They let people borrow, return or replace books as they go about their day.
