Police have released video footage of a cocaine courier weaving through heavy traffic heading for Leeds Festival in August.

James Johnson, 31, was trying to escape from officers from North and West Yorkshire because he had 10kg of the Class A drug in his car. As he did so, he hit speeds of 130mph.

Police first spotted him heading north on the M1 near Junction 47, the A656 turn-off just before where the M1 merges with the A1(M).

Both motorways were busy with traffic as it was midday on August 28, the Friday of the August Bank Holiday weekend, and Leeds Festival was underway.

Watch footage from the pursuit here:

At one stage, he drove on the hard shoulder, which had been closed to traffic by a line of cones.

Johnson then took the slip road to the A64 heading east towards York and drove so fast police momentarily lost sight of him.

But almost at once they saw him again because he had crashed into a taxi at the western Tadcaster turn-off. They caught up with him and arrested him. He had no licence and was uninsured.

The A659 westbound slip road onto the A64 towards Leeds was closed by the crash for some time.
