SAINSBURY’S has applied to cut free parking time for customers.

The proposal would reduce the maximum stay at its Otley store from four hours to three.

The supermarket chain has submitted an application to Leeds City Council to change a planning condition originally approved in 2007 for its Bondgate car park.

WSP says the current four-hour limit has led to regular parking shortages since the store opened in 2008, particularly on market days and during peak trading periods.

According to planning consultants WSP, who submitted the application on behalf of Sainsbury’s, the longer parking period has contributed to congestion, with cars circulating as drivers search for available spaces.

This has raised concerns about pedestrian and highway safety.

The applicant argues that a three-hour limit would improve space turnover while still giving visitors ample time to shop at both the supermarket and in Otley town centre.

The submission also points out that nearby supermarkets have shorter limits.

Waitrose on Whitley Croft Road allows 90 minutes, while Asda on Pool Road permits up to three hours.

A 2015 application to cut the limit to two hours was withdrawn after objections from Otley Town Council.

The applicant says the latest proposal is based on more than a decade of experience at the site.

The planning statement says the change would not affect the number of parking spaces or have any additional environmental impact.
