The date for the trial of a man accused of committing murder on the A1(M) in Yorkshire has been set.

Florin Chiriac, 31, appeared at Leeds Crown Court a day after he had appeared at York Magistrates' Court.

He was charged with murdering a 22-year-old woman following a fatal crash on the A1(M) near Scotch Corner on Sunday (October 4).

Chiriac is also alleged to have attempted to cause grievous bodily harm and faces a dangerous driving charge.

Judge Robin Mairs ordered that his trial begin at Leeds Crown Court on March 22.

It is expected to last two weeks including the Easter weekend.

Chiriac, who attended the hearing from HMP Hull via a video link, cried throughout the brief hearing and did not apply for bail.

He was remanded in custody.

The crash involved a silver Ford Transit and a silver Volkswagen Golf, both travelling south at about 6.10pm on Sunday between Junctions 57 and 56 just north of Scotch Corner.

The A1(M) was closed for the rest of Sunday evening and throughout the night while the emergency services dealt with the collision and police carried out their onsite investigations.

Chiriac, of Hampstead Road, Newcastle, was not asked to enter his pleas during the hearing.

His next appearance before Leeds Crown Court will be on November 6 when he will be expected to enter his plea to the charges he faces at a plea and trial preparation hearing.
