Pupil helps man who fell off bike and uses pocket money to get him takeaway

A schoolgirl has been commended by Yorkshire Ambulance Service for her compassion after helping an injured cyclist.

Hannah Annakin, a Year 7 pupil at Batley Girls' High School, came to the aid of an elderly man who fell from his bicycle on September 23, 2026, making sure he was comfortable and not alone while they waited for emergency help.

Headteacher Mr Kibble said: "We are overwhelmingly proud of Hannah.

"Her quick thinking, generosity, and genuine concern for a member of our local community represent the absolute best of our school values.

"To act with such empathy and responsibility under pressure is truly remarkable, and she is an extraordinary role model for her peers."

After learning the gentleman had not eaten that day, Hannah used her own pocket money to buy him food from a nearby takeaway.

A paramedic who attended the scene was so moved by her actions that they contacted the school to ensure she was recognised.

The patient was said to be deeply grateful, and the paramedic described Hannah’s kindness as a powerful reminder of how even small gestures can make a big difference.

Hannah has since been awarded a formal Certificate of Commendation and a letter of praise from the school.
