The M62 has been named one of the UK’s most challenging motorways for drivers.

Ranked ninth in MoneySuperMarket’s rankings, the route was scored based on delays, collision rates and service station facilities.

The M62 recorded 78 collisions in the past year, a collision risk of 0.453 per kilometre and an average delay of 8.98 seconds per vehicle per mile.

A total of 20,240 incidents were reported on the motorway, with 19,440 occurring at junctions.

Alicia Hempsted at MoneySuperMarket said: "Feeling nervous about motorway driving is common, especially for less frequent drivers, but a bit of preparation goes a long way.

"Give yourself extra time so you're not rushing, and plan your route and rest stops in advance."

Ms Hempsted also urged drivers to check their tyres, fuel, lights and fluids before setting off, and to review their car insurance to ensure they understand their coverage.

She said: "It’s also important to ensure you’re taking a proper break regularly.

"The Highway Code recommends taking a minimum break of 15 minutes after every two hours of driving, or if you feel at all sleepy, making sure to stop in a safe place such as a service station."
