A man has appeared in court charged with murder after a fatal crash on the A1(M).

Florin Chiriac, from Newcastle, stood in the dock at York Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (October 8) charged with murder, attempted grievous bodily harm, and dangerous driving.

The 31-year-old, of Hampstead Road, did not enter any pleas during the hearing and was remanded in custody until an appearance at Leeds Crown Court this morning.

He was remanded once again today until his next appearance for a plea and trial preparation hearing on November 6.

Police were called to the A1(M) shortly after 6pm following the incident, which involved a silver Ford Transit and a silver Volkswagen Golf, both of which were travelling southbound.

North Yorkshire Police initially arrested two men - a 31-year-old from Newcastle and a 23-year-old from Grimsby - on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The 23-year-old man has been released with no further action.

The woman’s family are continuing to be supported by specially trained officers.
