Doll's legs and massage oil among odd finds in Northumbrian Water beach clean

A month-long Northumbrian Water clean-up uncovered scratch cards, doll's legs, broken scissors, a roadworks sign and other odd items.

More than 200 volunteers have helped clean up 50 bags of litter from North East beaches, uncovering some bizarre finds along the way.

The month-long campaign, led by Northumbrian Water, saw staff swap their daily duties for litter picking along the coastline from Seaton Sluice to Seaham.

Unusual items collected included a pair of doll’s legs, massage oil, scratch cards, a shopping trolley, a roadworks sign, and broken scissors.

Joel Hobson, Land Data Specialist at Northumbrian Water who took part in a clean-up at Whitley Bay, said: "It was really rewarding to get the team out of the office for a day and contribute to a great cause.

"It gave us the chance to spend time with colleagues we don't usually work with, and we received lots of positive comments from members of the public along the way.

"We even managed to remove a rogue shopping trolley from Whitley Bay beach."

The campaign concluded with a final clean-up in Seaton Sluice on September 24.

The project was part of Northumbrian Water’s Just an Hour programme, which encourages employees to volunteer time for community projects across the North East.

Northumbrian Water say that the beach cleans not only helped protect local wildlife and coastal environments, but also brought people together from different teams, joining forces to make a visible difference in their communities.
