WATCH: Man arrested after early morning police pursuit from Harrogate to York ends in rooftop arrest

A man has been arrested after a police pursuit which began near Harrogate and ended in York during the early hours of the morning.

North Yorkshire Police said officers attempted to stop a white Volkswagen Polo on the A168, near Junction 47, at around 3.15am on Friday (October 9).

The vehicle failed to stop and continued onto the A59, where officers reported it was being driven erratically and swerving across the road.

A number of police units were deployed during the pursuit, including roads policing officers and a police drone team.

Despite officers successfully deploying a stinger device which deflated one of the vehicle’s tyres, the driver continued towards York before abandoning the car near The Ainsty pub.

The suspect then fled on foot, running through nearby streets, gardens and allotments in an attempt to evade police.

Officers said the drone team played a key role in tracking the man’s movements from above, allowing officers on the ground to follow his route.

The suspect was eventually located on the roof of a property in Lavender Grove, where he was brought down safely following negotiations with police.

A man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences, including failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, driving with excess alcohol, drug-driving, criminal damage and taking a vehicle without consent.

He remains in police custody while enquiries continue.

The vehicle has been recovered and will undergo forensic examination.

North Yorkshire Police thanked residents for their patience and understanding following the disruption caused by the overnight police response.
