Huddersfield Railway Station to close for more than a month over festive period
Huddersfield Railway Station will be closed for 38 days over Christmas and well into the new year, as its £70m makeover gears up for completion.
The news comes as the station has only just reopened from its latest closure, which spanned 16-days and came to an end on October 5. In this time, improvements such as: the installation of two new lines of track; platform extensions; the restoration of the historic roof canopy; and preparation works to carry out electrification of the line, took place.
Now that this stage of work has been completed, attention is turned to the next phase of delivery which will see the main station upgrades completed by early 2027.
Works to electrify the line will continue beyond this date, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) understands.

To get this final leg finished, a 38-day closure is required. This will kick off following the final service on Thursday, December 24 until Sunday, January 31, 2027.
The station will then reopen on Monday, February 1, 2027, when engineers will carry out further transformative upgrades to the railway and station.
Several shorter closures at Huddersfield Railway Station are also on the way over the following weekends:
- Saturday 10 & Sunday, October 11, 2026
- Saturday 14 & Sunday, November 15, 2026
- Sunday, December 13, 2026
- Sunday, December 20, 2026
All of the works form part of the wider multi-billion-pound TRU programme, which is transforming the railway between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York and is set to improve capacity, reliability and accessibility while supporting the future introduction of cleaner electric trains.
James Richardson, TRU managing director, said of the recent 16-day closure: “Completing this latest phase of work is down to the dedication, skill, and teamwork of our teams. From infrastructure delivery to planning and keeping passengers on the move during the disruption to their journeys, every part of the programme has played a role in this latest work.”
Liam O’Shaughnessy, TRU programme delivery lead for Northern, added: “The work that has been completed over the last 16 days in the Huddersfield area is another crucial step towards delivering the benefits that the Transpennine Route Upgrade will bring for customers across the North.
“We have worked closely with our industry partners to keep customers on the move as these works have continued and we would like to thank our customers and local communities for their patience and cooperation whilst these improvement works have been taking place.”
