Huddersfield driver caused £6k damage after ramming police car

A dangerous driver who caused £6,000 damage after ramming a police has been jailed.

Karam Tofeek was driving a grey BMW X5 in Huddersfield when he was pulled over by officers who suspected he had no insurance.

After initially pulling to the side of Leeds Road on July 23, he then refused to turn the car’s engine off, before ramming into a police car in front of him while two officers were still inside.

Police told Tofeek repeatedly to turn the engine off, but were forced to arrest him when he refused.

West Yorkshire Police said no officers were injured in the incident.

Karam Tofeek was jailed at Leeds Crown Court.

Tofeek was convicted of driving a vehicle dangerously and was jailed for one year and nine months at Leeds Crown Court on October 7.

He was also disqualified from driving for three years and seven months, and fined £187.

West Yorkshire Police Sergeant Andrew Johnson said: "Two officers were put in an extremely dangerous situation when the defendant rammed their police vehicle. Thankfully, neither was seriously injured, but this incident highlights the very real risks our officers face every day.

“Our officers continue to show bravery and professionalism when dealing with dangerous and unpredictable situations, while protecting the communities they serve.

"We welcome the sentence, which reflects the seriousness of this reckless behaviour and hope it sends a clear message that putting officers and other road users at risk will not be tolerated.”
