Plans for new Lidl store on site of former hotel and country club 'moving forward'
Proposals for a new Lidl store on the site of a former hotel and country club are “moving forward”, the company has said.
The update comes as Redcar and Cleveland councillors posted on social media to inform residents that no planning decision has yet been made regarding the scheme, at Stokesley Road in Marton, which was first lodged with thecouncil back in August 2025.
The site in question was home to the Marton Hotel and Country Club, which went up in flames back in 2019.
Fourteen months on from submission of the German discounter’s proposals, Marton East independent Councillors Dorothy Davison and Jason McConnell have posted on their joint Facebook account to tell residents that the application remains under consideration and that there is an outstanding objection from National Highways.

A spokesperson for Lidl said when the supermarket chain consulted residents last year, more than 1,100 local people “backed our plans” to bring the derelict site back into use, with many people welcoming a greater range of shopping choice nearby.
The spokesperson added: “We’re now working closely with the council’s planning and highways teams to sort out the final outstanding matters, and we expect the plans to go before the planning committee in the next few months.”
If approved it would be Middlesbrough’s fourth Lidl, with existing stores located on Newport Road and along Cargo Fleet Lane, while a contentious application for Linthorpe received the green light from members of the council’s planning committee earlier this year.
The application form details that, if plans are approved, there would be 113 car parking spaces, six disability spaces, two electric vehicle charging spaces and nine parent and child spaces.

The same form sets out the proposed hours of opening, which would run from 8am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sundays and bank holidays. Plans were registered by the council on August 19, 2025.
Prior to submission of the application, it was reported that the multi-million pound investment would feature an in-store bakery and a ‘Middle of Lidl’ aisle, while creating around 40 new jobs.
Shoppers would also have access to customer toilets with baby changing facilities.
