A season of events and a major new exhibition will launch in 2027 at a museum in Leeds.

The Thackray Museum of Medicine is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a new programme and more than £420,000 in funding.

The funding includes £249,500 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and will support planning for the museum’s long-term future, including potential upgrades to its Grade II-listed building, wider community engagement, and new income-generating opportunities.

Edward Appleyard, chief executive of the Thackray Museum of Medicine, said: "This announcement comes at a hugely exciting moment for Thackray.

"As we prepare to celebrate 30 years since opening, this support gives us the time and space to think ambitiously about what the museum can become over the next three decades, and how the museum and its collection can best serve our visitors and the wide-ranging communities – from healthcare professionals to diverse Harehills residents – around us."

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the museum will open a new exhibition called Complexion in February 2027.

Running until June, the exhibition will explore the complex experiences of people with melanin-rich skin, balancing the profound joy and pride they find in their skin with their stories of being unheard, overlooked and mistreated.
