Theatre presents Kay Mellor play exploring memories of a lost love

KEIGHLEY Playhouse offers “an emotional and unforgettable evening” with its production of Kay Mellor’s acclaimed play, A Passionate Woman.

Directed by Jonathan Scott, it’s the story of Betty, a Yorkshire housewife whose seemingly ordinary life is transformed when memories of a passionate youthful romance come flooding back. Looking back on the choices she has made, Betty is forced to confront the gap between the life she dreamed of and the reality she has lived.

Betty reflects on her passionate love affair

Betty is played by Katrina Wood, supported by John Campbell as the charismatic and mysterious Craze, the man who captured Betty’s heart many years before. Anthony Calvert plays her husband Donald, while Ethan Lee appears as their son, Mark.

Director Jonathan Scott says one of the most striking aspects of the production is its challenging set design. On the day of her son’s wedding, Betty retreats to the loft of her home, seeking refuge among memories of the past, before eventually climbing onto the roof. The action moves between different times and locations, requiring a complex and imaginative set that reflects both the physical world of the family home and the emotional landscape of Betty’s memories. The production team at Keighley Playhouse has embraced this challenge to bring Kay Mellor’s vision vividly to life on stage.

Says Jonathan: “Kay Mellor’s writing is wonderfully honest and insightful. The play explores love, loyalty and regret, but it also celebrates the resilience of ordinary people. It’s a story that many audience members will recognise in some way from their own lives. The setting is also a fascinating challenge, with much of the action taking place in a loft and on a rooftop, creating a production that is visually as well as emotionally engaging.”

The production continues Keighley Playhouse’s first season following the theatre’s recent refurbishment. The improvements have created a more welcoming environment for audiences while preserving the character and intimacy that have made the Playhouse one of the area’s most popular theatre venues.

Whether you are already a fan of Kay Mellor’s work or discovering it for the first time, A Passionate Woman promises an evening of “compelling drama and outstanding performances.”
