A man has been charged with murder after a crash on the A1(M).

Police and paramedics were called to the southbound carriageway between Junctions 57 and 56 near Barton following a crash on Sunday (October 4).

The incident, just after 6pm, involved a silver Ford Transit and a silver Volkswagen Golf, both of which were travelling southbound.

North Yorkshire Police initially arrested two men - a 31-year-old from Newcastle and a 23-year-old from Grimsby - on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

But in an update on Thursday (October 8), the force confirmed the 31-year-old has been charged with murder, attempted grievous bodily harm (GBH), and dangerous driving.

The 23-year-old man has been released with no further action.

The force said the woman’s family are continuing to be supported by specially trained officers.

A spokesperson said: “We know there were a number of vehicles travelling on the A1(M) at the time of the collision, and we would like to thank all those motorists who have already spoken to officers or come forward with information and dashcam footage to assist our investigation.

“However, we are continuing to appeal for witnesses. If you saw the collision and have not yet spoken to police, please get in touch. Even the smallest detail could prove significant to our enquiries.

“We are also keen to hear from anyone who saw either vehicle in the moments leading up to the collision. In particular, we would like to speak to drivers who may have dashcam footage showing either vehicle before the collision, or footage of the collision itself.
