A celebration of County Durham farming has highlighted the sector’s challenges and its importance to the county’s economy, environment and rural communities.

The event marked Back British Farming Day and brought Durham County Council and National Farmers’ Union members together at The Light to discuss agriculture’s challenges and opportunities.

Councillor Tim McGuiness, the council’s cabinet member for rural, farming and transport, said: "Our farmers and local growers make a huge contribution to the local economy, environment and our rural communities, and they continue to face unprecedented challenges and cost pressures.

"This meeting was a great opportunity to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to food security and farming.

"Discussions are taking place in regard to planned actions, and we will continue to support the farmers in our region as best we can."

Councillors and NFU members also spoke directly with farmers about supporting the rural economy.

Laurie Norris, NFU North Riding and Durham county adviser, said: "Durham farmers and growers are proud to produce the food that feeds the nation while delivering for nature, rural communities and the wider economy.

"Farmers are facing huge pressures, from extreme weather and rising costs to uncertainty over future policies.

"It is important that decision-makers understand both the contribution farming makes to our local economy and the challenges facing family farm businesses.

"We want to see government set ambitious targets for homegrown food production and provide farm businesses with the confidence they need to invest, grow and continue producing the food our nation relies on.

"By working together, we can help secure a positive future for British food production, support rural communities and ensure farming remains at the heart of Durham's economy and countryside."
