A transport service is being expanded to improve access to hospital care for patients in rural North Yorkshire.

The pilot scheme, launched in July by University Hospitals Tees, supports North Yorkshire residents travelling to The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough for appointments or to visit loved ones.

Patients who do not qualify for free NHS transport but face difficulties using public transport now have a more accessible travel option.

Andy Jackson, who oversees the transport operations, said: "We are pleased to be extending our transport service for residents across rural North Yorkshire by offering eligible patients transport directly from their homes to connect with the shuttle service."

The expanded service now offers free transport from the patient’s home to Friarage Hospital, where they can catch the shuttle to James Cook for a £10 fare.

The return journey home is also included at no additional cost.

The service covers areas including Hawes, Northallerton, Richmond, Bedale, Leyburn, Thirsk, and surrounding communities.

Each request is assessed individually, with eligibility based on factors such as disability or difficulty accessing public transport.

Patients or carers can book by calling the transport hotline on 01642 838877, Monday to Friday, between 8am and 4pm.
