Five suspected arson attacks have been reported at a popular park on five consecutive nights.

A councillor has called on police to use dispersal powers after five suspected arson attacks in Pudsey Park.

Firefighters said they had attended five fires in the park, off Church Lane and Radcliffe Lane, Pudsey, since October 3.

The latest fire was reported last night, and all five are suspected arson.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to Pudsey Park last night to reports of a fire in the open at 8.08pm on Tuesday.

“One crew attended and extinguished a bin fire - believed to be suspected deliberate ignition.

“Looking back at the log, we have attended Pudsey Park five times since October 3.”

“All of these have been recorded as suspected deliberate ignitions.”

The frequency of the fires has frustrated a Pudsey councillor, who wants police to take action including using dispersal powers.

Cllr Simon Seary said: “Five fires in five nights. Enough is enough.

“Another fire in Pudsey Park this evening (Tuesday). That makes five fires in five nights.

“This has gone on long enough.

“West Yorkshire Police need to step up, take control and take firm action against those responsible.”

“I’m meeting West Yorkshire Police and the Leeds Anti-Social Behaviour Team.”

“I’ll be demanding a clear plan to stop these fires, including consideration of Section 34 dispersal powers.”

“Anyone given a dispersal direction who fails to comply without a reasonable excuse commits a criminal offence and may face prosecution and a fine.

“Actions should have consequences.

“Parents, where are your children?

“If they are involved, please speak to them and take responsibility for making sure they understand the seriousness of their actions.

“We should not, and will not, accept this in Pudsey.”

The Telegraph & Argus has contacted West Yorkshire Police for more details about the fires.
