A classic Yorkshire biscuit has taken home the gold at a national awards event.
Bettys’ Yorkshire Shortbread Biscuits won gold in the Sweet Biscuits category at the 2026 Great British Food Awards, announced in London.
The awards, established in 2014, celebrate the best of British food and drink, highlighting excellence in artisanal produce through a rigorous judging process led by top chefs, critics, and industry influencers.
Gavin Johnson, head of bakery operations at Bettys Craft Bakery, said: "We are incredibly proud that our Yorkshire Shortbread has been awarded a Gold Medal at The Great British Food Awards 2026.
"This recognition reflects the enduring values of Bettys, the finest ingredients, best quality, traditional craftsmanship and a deep connection to our Yorkshire roots.
"Most importantly, the award belongs to the talented bakery team, whose skill, passion and care go into making our Yorkshire shortbread every day.
"Their commitment to excellence helps ensure that our products reflect the heritage, quality and attention to detail that customers have associated with Bettys for generations."
The Yorkshire Shortbread Biscuits have been made using the same recipe for 40 years and have become a favourite with customers.
Judging in the Sweet Biscuits category was led by Cherish Finden, best known as a judge on Bake Off: The Professionals.
Ms Finden said: "A well-made traditional shortbread with a lovely buttery flavour, balanced sweetness and a subtle touch of salt that enhances the overall taste.
"The delicate, crumbly texture makes it particularly pleasant to eat.
"Overall, it is a very enjoyable and satisfying shortbread.
"I could eat the whole packet with a cup of tea.
"Love it."
Gold badges are awarded to the very best product in each category, with typically only around the top 10 per cent of entries making the grade.
Winners must meet the highest standards in taste, texture, and appearance.
The judging panel includes some of the UK’s most acclaimed chefs, food critics, and influencers.
Bettys attributes its win to real butter and nearly a century of baking expertise, resulting in a rich, melt-in-the-mouth biscuit that has stood the test of time.
