A Yorkshire care home group is asking residents to donate unwanted spectacles which could help transform the lives of people in developing countries.
Spellman Care is supporting Lions International’s Recycle for Sight campaign, in partnership with Keighley Lions Club, and is collecting glasses to be refurbished and distributed overseas.
The appeal runs from October 5 until November 1, and encourages people to donate old or unused spectacles, reading glasses, and sunglasses.
Philippa Young, group operations manager at Spellman Care, said: "We are absolutely delighted to be supporting Lions International’s fantastic Recycle for Sight campaign alongside Keighley Lions throughout October.
"It is wonderful to see our Airedale Seniors Collective initiative already bearing fruit.
"After meeting the Keighley Lions team when they hosted a stall at our recent gathering, we immediately saw a brilliant opportunity to collaborate.
"By hosting collection points across all four of our care homes, we hope to gather as many unused specs as possible and help turn unwanted glasses into a life-changing gift of sight for people across the globe, while demonstrating the true value of bringing our local community together."
Collection bins are located in the reception areas of all four Spellman Care homes: Craven Nursing Home in Skipton, Ghyll Royd Care Home in Guiseley, Springbank Care Home in Silsden, and Steeton Court Nursing Home in Steeton.
Donated glasses will be passed to Keighley Lions Club before being sent to one of the Lions recycling centres in Chichester or at Lions National HQ in Birmingham for sorting.
Volunteers will wash, grade, and prepare suitable glasses for reuse, ensuring none are sent to landfill.
The refurbished spectacles will be distributed to adults and children in developing countries through Medico France or directly to clinics such as the Jomo Kenyatta Optical Clinic in Kenya.
Spellman Care is a family-run group of residential and nursing homes with more than 35 years of experience in the sector.
