More than 800 people lit up Worth Valley as they stepped out for Sue Ryder’s annual Starlight Hike, raising tens of thousands of pounds during a sparkling evening of celebration and remembrance.

Walking in memory of loved ones, families, friends, and colleagues gathered to support Sue Ryder’s palliative and bereavement services, including those delivered through Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice in Oxenhope.

The event, held on Saturday, October 3, is expected to raise more than £80,000.

Rachel Binns, regional fundraising manager at Sue Ryder, said: "As always, this year’s Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Worth Valley was filled with joy, laughter and memories, as well as the chance to honour and celebrate those close to us.

"It was absolutely wonderful.

"A big thank you to our amazing volunteers, sponsors Stirk Lambert & Co and to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway Ltd for their generosity and backing in making this event possible.

"Every magical moment and step taken made a difference, helping to ensure no one has to face death or grief alone."

Participants chose between a 5km or 10km route, starting from Oxenhope Railway Station at 6pm after boarding the Starlight Express train.

The route was illuminated with lights and entertainment, with walkers donning colourful outfits, glitter, and glow sticks.

Among those taking part was Kevan Carling, 58, from Cross Roads, who was determined to take part in memory of his wife Kat, despite breaking his leg in seven places just months before the event.

Kat received care at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice before she died on October 11, 2025, just six months after the couple married.

The date was also Mr Carling’s birthday.

Although he was only discharged from hospital four days before the event, he was determined to take part with the help of a mobility scooter and crutches.

Mr Carling said: "The day itself was a mixture of emotions.

"Getting ready, realising why me, my close friends and family were actually doing the walk, and the fact that the one person I wanted to be with us was not there.

"Everything led to feeling incredibly sad one minute to laughing and smiling the next."

Walkers also passed through the peaceful grounds of Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, where they could dedicate a star to someone special.

At the finish line, each participant received a medal to mark their achievement.

Anyone wishing to take part in next year’s Starlight Hike can register their interest on the Sue Ryder website.
