Cleveland Police, which has been supporting fire and rescue crews at the scene, said the majority of road closures put in place around the former library have now been lifted.

However, emergency services remain in attendance and motorists have been warned that disruption is still likely while the scene is secured.

Police have asked people to avoid the area where possible and to plan ahead if travelling through Billingham this morning.

At the height of the incident, road closures were put in place at Causeway and Kingsway and people living nearby were advised to keep their doors and windows closed.

Cleveland Fire Brigade initially confirmed on Tuesday evening that crews were dealing with a building fire at Queensway and urged people to stay away from the area.

An update from the fire service this morning said: "One fire appliance remains in attendance at the scene of the fire at the former Billingham Library.

"Crews are carrying out damping-down operations, checking the remains of the building and dealing with any remaining hotspots to prevent the fire from reigniting."
