A girl was diagnosed with salmonella after a dream family holiday in Egypt turned into a "complete nightmare."

Evie Hopkin, of Bradford, became seriously unwell while staying with her family at the five-star TUI Blue Sensatori Coral Sea resort near Sharm El-Sheikh between August 17 and 31.

The 12-year-old suffered stomach cramps, diarrhoea, a fever and vomiting during the trip and twice attended the hotel's medical clinic, where she was treated with antibiotics and intravenous fluids for dehydration.

After returning home, tests carried out following a visit to her GP confirmed she had salmonella.

TUI said it was "sorry to hear" Evie had been unwell and was investigating the circumstances raised.

'Complete nightmare'

Evie's mother, Debbie Hopkin, said the family's trip had turned from a "dream holiday" into a "complete nightmare".

She said: "It was awful seeing Evie so poorly and knowing there was nothing I could do to make her better.

TUI response

TUI said its records showed the family reported her illness during their stay and that support had been provided by both the hotel and the travel company.

However, it said neither the family nor their representatives contacted the travel operator after returning to the UK to raise concerns about the hotel or provide medical test results.

The family have now instructed lawyers to investigate the circumstances surrounding Evie's illness.

Debbie said: "We tried to make the most of the last few days, but it was unfortunately ruined. Then to hear that Evie had salmonella was shocking."

Salmonella is a bacterial infection that can cause diarrhoea, fever, stomach cramps and vomiting.

Most people recover within a few days, although symptoms can sometimes be severe.

'No evidence' of increased illness at hotel

In a statement, TUI said: "We're sorry to hear that Evie was unwell during her holiday and understand how upsetting that can be, particularly when you're away from home.

The spokesperson added: "We continue to monitor reports in line with our established procedures alongside the hotel, local health authorities and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

"We have seen no evidence of an increase in reported illness at this hotel."

The company said the hotel remained open and was "not subject to any health or safety restrictions."
