A temporary car park could soon take shape to support ongoing regeneration efforts.

Sunderland City Council has submitted plans for a 186-space car park at the Sheepfolds Industrial Estate, close to the Stadium of Light, to address "displaced parking" resulting from construction in the surrounding area.

The site covers former industrial land bordered by Millennium Way, Hay Street, Brooke Street and Easington Street.

The fenced surface car park is intended to replace lost parking spaces during construction and support contractors working on site.

It is expected to be in use for up to three years, until the proposed Sheepfolds mobility hub is brought into use.

Once finished, the mobility hub will offer car parking, EV charging, cycle storage and other mobility services to support the new Sheepfolds community.

Plans for the wider area include hundreds of new homes, an aparthotel, a mobility hub, offices and potential planning uses ranging from commercial and health services, to restaurants and cafés.

Earlier this year, a separate planning application was submitted for 102 new homes south of the Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy as part of the first development phase.

A transport statement submitted with the car park plans explains its necessity.

The statement said: "The proposed temporary [car park] is almost like-for-like compared to the amount of parking spaces that will be lost, so the proposed car park will deal with any displaced parking during construction, as well as providing somewhere for contractors to park.

"It is not envisioned that the temporary car park will cause an increase to traffic flow to the area."

The car park will also include nine disabled parking bays.
