One of the world's fastest-growing sports can now be played year-round in County Durham after two new indoor padel courts opened at Thorpe Farm Centre.

The Teesdale attraction, near Greta Bridge, has opened the courts inside a converted barn, with one for singles and one for doubles, so players can play whatever the weather.

Padel combines tennis and squash and has surged in popularity across the UK, thanks to its fast, social gameplay.

Players of all ages and abilities can use the new courts, with equipment available for beginners.

Harvey Barkes, of Thorpe Farm Centre, said: "Padel, a mix of tennis and squash, is the world's fastest growing sport.

"It's fast and fun, and also incredibly sociable.

"We believe the facilities at Thorpe Farm Centre will make it a great place to play.

"Being inside a barn, you won't be limited by the Teesdale weather, so you can come and play padel all year round."

He said newcomers can quickly learn the game.

Harvey added: "With rackets available to use at the courts, and balls available through a vending machine, there's nothing to stop you giving padel a go.

"It's suitable for anyone aged five or six upwards and designed to be really easy to pick up.

"Total beginners can be enjoying impressive rallies within 10 minutes of picking up a racket."

The courts are open daily from 7am to 10pm and can be booked through the Playtomic app.
