A Co-op store in the heart of Barnard Castle will close later this year after a decision has been made to sell the site.

The Horsemarket store will stop trading as a Co-op in weeks, but shoppers will still be able to use it under a new operator, Stanley Wines.

Co-op said the store’s staff will transfer to the new retailer, protecting local jobs.

A Co-op spokesperson said: "Following careful consideration, a decision has been taken to sell our Barnard Castle store.

"While we are sorry to be leaving the community, we are pleased to confirm that the store will continue trading under a new retailer, with colleagues transferring to the new operator, helping to safeguard local jobs.

"Co-op remains committed to serving and supporting local communities with around 30 stores across County Durham."

The store will officially close its doors on November 14.

Co-op reassured customers that the site will continue trading after the handover.

The store stands on Horsemarket and has served Barnard Castle shoppers for years.

The retailer currently operates around 30 stores in County Durham, including a new outlet which opened in Wynyard earlier this year.
