An Emmerdale star is returning to the Dales for a dramatic new storyline.

Isobel Middleton will reprise her role as Detective Inspector Roberts in the long-running ITV soap.

She will be reappearing as part of the ongoing murder plot involving rapist Dr Todd.

The actress has appeared in Emmerdale on and off for 12 years, most recently last April.

"It’s a dramatic storyline twist coming that could see Charity freed from prison despite confessing to murder but there are lots of twists to come," a source told The Sun.

A recent storyline saw Charity Dingle take the blame for Dr Todd’s death, though viewers know it was her granddaughter Sarah who accidentally killed the doctor earlier this year.

The murder was revealed in August following the villain’s demise in a July episode.

In the lead-up to the incident, Charity had confronted Dr Todd, played by Caroline Harker, about her actions, accusing her of sexual assault.

The doctor threatened to sue Charity for slander and continued to deny any wrongdoing.

During the confrontation, Dr Todd also threatened to tell Charity’s granddaughter Sarah Sugden that her daughter was not Jacob’s child.

This enraged Charity, who pinned Dr Todd to the sofa and delivered an emotional speech about the doctor’s lies.

Unbeknownst to them, Sarah was standing in the doorway and overheard everything.

Realising the truth, Sarah told Charity they needed to go to the police, but Charity explained she had already tried.

Dr Todd laughed and accused Charity of lying, prompting a distressed Sarah to push her.

As a result, Dr Todd stumbled, hitting her head on the corner of a table before collapsing.

Blood began to pool around her head, and she died from the injury.

Are Emmerdale and Coronation Street on tonight?

Since January, both ITV soaps have been airing during a self-labelled "power hour".

Emmerdale usually airs weeknights at 8pm, with Coronation Street following at 8.30pm, both on ITV1.

However, both ITV soaps will not air this evening (Tuesday, October 6) after a schedule change.

This is due to UEFA Nations League coverage that will disrupt the usual soap schedule.

Czechia will play England this evening at Wembley in the fourth Group A3 match, with kick-off at 7:45pm.

Both soaps will return tomorrow (Wednesday, October 7), with episodes on Thursday and Friday, as well as tonight's cancelled episodes on Sunday.
