An exhibition exploring the macabre is set to open in York.

Stephenson's Gallery is preparing to launch its Gothic & Ghostly: Art of the Macabre exhibition in time for the Halloween season.

The haunting exhibition will run from October 7 to November 1, 2026.

York, recognised as one of Europe's most haunted cities, will provide a fitting backdrop for this exhibition, which delves into the darker corners of human imagination.

The gallery's Northern and Eastern European collections will be showcased, featuring a selection of paintings, sculptures, and drawings that draw inspiration from the uncanny and ghostly tales.

The exhibition promises a unique exploration of identity, transformation, and the things that haunt our minds and landscapes.

It will feature five different artists, each presenting their own take on the macabre.

These include BP Portrait Award-winning British figurative artist Peter Monkman, Romanian surrealist Adrian Paiu, Yorkshire native Anthony Hodgson, Scarborough-based artist Andrew Cheetham, and Slovakian painter Miloš Hronec.

A spokesperson for the gallery said: "This is an exploration of what haunts us in our minds, our bodies, and our landscapes."

Gothic & Ghostly: Art of the Macabre will be held at Stephenson's Gallery in Clifford Street.
