Yorkshire Museum wins national award for Melsonby Hoard exhibition

Yorkshire Museum’s Melsonby Hoard exhibition was named the winner in the Society for Museum Archaeology Awards for Excellence.

A museum exhibition showcasing the Melsonby Hoard has been named a winner in the Society for Museum Archaeology Awards for Excellence.

Yorkshire Museum’s Melsonby Hoard exhibition, Chariots, Treasure and Power, was named winner of the Exhibition, Display or Interpretation Project category at the Society for Museum Archaeology Awards for Excellence.

The exhibition, which highlights an important archaeological discovery, was praised for its ambition and for displaying the artefacts in their pre-conservation state.

Glynn Davis, senior curator at the Yorkshire Museum, said: "This award means a great deal to all of us here at York Museums Trust.

"The team is incredibly proud of this award, and we are grateful to the Society for recognising the importance of our partnership work, involving archaeologists and academics to the residents of Melsonby themselves."

Judges commended the exhibition for giving visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the full archaeological process, including metal detecting, excavation, conservation, and display.

In 2025, a public fundraising campaign enabled the museum to secure the hoard for the nation, with more than 1,000 people backing the effort.

The Yorkshire Museum currently displays around 20 per cent of the 900 objects found, with further conservation and fundraising needed to stabilise and exhibit more items in the future.
