A man from York who smoked up to 80 cigarettes a day has quit for good after more than 40 years.
Kevin, 62, began smoking at 18 and said the decision to quit came after realising the impact it had on his health and time with family.
With support from York Health Trainers Stop Smoking Service, Kevin used nicotine patches and a vape to help him quit.
He said: "Smoking didn't make me feel great.
"I woke up every day with a cough and struggled to walk up the stairs.
"I was gasping for breath and worried about my health.
"When I was smoking, I spent a lot of time outside.
"I missed time with my children and grandchildren.
"I couldn't run around with them or do things like play football in the park.
"I knew I had to quit for my health and for my family."
Councillor Lucy Steels-Walshaw, executive member for health, wellbeing and adult social care at City of York Council, added: "Kevin's story shows that it's never too late to quit smoking and start seeing the benefits.
"Stoptober is a great opportunity to take that first step.
"Quitting smoking isn't always easy, but you don't have to do it alone."
