A popular North Yorkshire restaurant is to close.
Origin, on Friarage Street, Northallerton, is going amid the “significant challenges” hitting the hospitality industry.
The news sparked dismay among its many regulars, with one saying they were “heartbroken” by the closure.
Origin will close on Saturday 31 October. Owners Josh and Katie revealed their plans “with heavy hearts” in a social media post.
“This decision has not been made lightly. In fact, it has been one of the hardest decisions we’ve ever had to make,” they wrote.
“Like so many businesses across the hospitality industry, the past year has brought significant challenges and, after a great deal of thought and consideration, we feel that now is the right time to bring our journey to a close.”
The restaurant has traded for five years. Josh and Katie thanked their customers and staff for their support.
“To everyone who has walked through our doors, supported us, recommended us, celebrated special occasions with us, or simply stopped by for a pint and a chat – thank you.
“You made Origin so much more than just a business. You made it a place filled with memories, friendships and moments that we will always look back on with a smile.”
They finished by saying: “Let’s enjoy one last month of award-winning small plates, loads of craft beer and cocktails, and end our time in Northallerton with a bang!”
‘A very special place’
Customers responded with tributes to the restaurant and sadness at its closure.
One wrote: “I don’t think I have ever felt heartbroken to hear a restaurant was closing! I have told every man and their dog about how amazing Origin is (the food, the drinks, the staff and the atmosphere).”
Another added: “So sorry you are having to close .Can’t understand how such a great restaurant can’t survive as a business.”
A third said: “Truly sad news. One of the best places in town where people love to meet for good food, atmosphere and beers.
“Northallerton’s losing a very special place.”
