A minimarket and bakery has been warned it could face legal action following a serious food safety breach.
Food hygiene inspectors visited Kawthar Mini Market & Bakery in Manningham in June after a report of an imminent health and food safety risk.
Health and Safety officers attended to investigate a referral of the significant risk of falls from height to the rear exits and fire exits to all businesses located at the parade at Manningham Lane.
Inspectors clocked a diesel generator
While onsite, they saw that a diesel generator was being used to power the premises after its electricity was cut off.
Staff switched off the generator each night, leaving fridges and freezers without power until the shop reopened.
Inspectors called it “a serious breach of food safety”.
This is because in doing so, owners "put all high risk food items in conditions likely to support the growth of food poisoning bacteria and the formation of toxins over multiple days.
"These high-risk food items have also been placed on the market in an injurious condition for sale to the final consumer.
"Food shall not be placed on the market if it is unsafe. Food business operators ensure the maintenance of the cold chain and must comply with temperature control requirements for foodstuffs."
How was the generator set up?
The diesel generator had been unsafely connected to the electricity fuse box. Exposed wires were accessible.
It had been running for several days.
The diesel generator had been turned off each night when the food business closed.
As a result, fridges and freezers holding high-risk food were left without power or temperature control.
The operator disposed of everything in the fridges and freezers during the visit.
Legal action could be taken
Kawthar Mini Market & Bakery was ordered to introduce and maintain a written food safety system and complete training suited to its activities.
The business will also be monitored to ensure it does not sell unsafe food.
Inspectors warned that further breaches could lead to enforcement action, legal proceedings and prosecution.
The T&A attempted to make contact with the owners and welcomes a response from Kawthar Mini Market & Bakery should they wish to contact us.
