Despite the efforts of emergency services, a 22-year-old woman from Newcastle was pronounced dead.
Her family has been informed and is being supported by specially trained officers.
Two men - a 31-year-old from Newcastle and a 23-year-old from Grimsby - have since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The A1(M) was closed for several hours while specialist investigators examined the scene and recovered the vehicles.
The road reopened northbound at about 5am on Monday, with the southbound carriageway reopening about two hours later.
Southbound traffic remained slow as emergency services cleared oil spilled in the crash.
