A former North East pub and restaurant business has been named and shamed by HMRC over deliberate tax defaults involving more than £96,000.

White Ensign Pub Limited appears on HMRC's list of deliberate tax defaulters, which names people and businesses handed penalties for deliberately failing to comply with their tax obligations or making deliberate errors in their tax returns.

HMRC gives the company's address as 389 King George Road, South Shields, and lists its trade or occupation as a licensed restaurant and public house.

A different venue now operates from the address and is separate from White Ensign Pub Limited and the matters detailed in the HMRC list.

According to HMRC, White Ensign Pub Limited's defaults involved £96,774.13 in tax and resulted in penalties totalling £44,032.21.

The period covered by the defaults runs from May 1, 2023, to February 28, 2025.

HMRC publishes details of deliberate tax defaulters where it has carried out an investigation and the person or business has been charged one or more penalties for deliberate defaults involving more than £50,000 in tax.

HMRC stresses that the figures published relate to the tax or duty on which qualifying penalties are based and do not necessarily represent the taxpayer's full default.

It also specifically warns that a person or business named on its list may no longer be at the published address.

HMRC says a business currently operating at a published address may have no connection with the person or business named on the list.

A business using the same name may also be under completely new management.

Details of deliberate tax defaulters can remain published for no more than 12 months from the date they first appear.
