Ukraine latest: Kyiv bridge hit in Russian air strike as Moscow vows retaliation

The attacks come amid German chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to Ukraine show support for Zelensky

Kyiv’s North Bridge has been hit in a Russian air strike on Sunday

Kyiv’s North Bridge has been hit in a Russian air strike on Sunday, the capital’s mayor said on Sunday.

The roadway of the bridge had already been attacked on Saturday, mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram.

The attacks came amid a visit by German chancellor Friedrich Merz who arrive to the capital in a show of support for president Volodymyr Zelensky.

Moscow vowed harsh retaliation against Ukraine after Zelensky doubled down on attacking refineries but said he would not target civilians in comments to Reuters. His comments came amid a policy of Russian strikes designed to force Ukrainians to abandon Kyiv.

“In response to these threats, the Russian Ministry of Defense reiterates that it is launching massive strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions specifically in response to the actions of the Kyiv regime's leader,” the ministry said.

It said the Ukrainian leader “bears full personal and political responsibility for the new attacks”.

Meanwhile. Russia has implemented new restrictions on the freedom of young men, requiring them to present military enlistment papers before participating in key aspects of public and economic life as its war in Ukraine drags on, a leaked document shared with The Sunday Times revealed.

Russia has reportedly launched Banderol missiles, part of its growing use of jet-powered loitering munitions that combine characteristics of cruise missiles and drones.

The Banderol’s speed, manoeuvrability and ability to fly at low altitudes can make it difficult for Ukrainian air defences to detect and intercept.

Ukraine praises EU diplomats for refusing to evacuate Kyiv after Russian threats

Ukrainian foreign minister Andrii Sybiha has publicly thanked European Union Ambassador Katarína Mathernová and the EU Delegation on Sunday after European diplomats refused Russian demands to evacuate the capital.

Moscow had issued warnings advising foreign diplomats and international missions to leave Kyiv amid escalating air strikes.

Sybiha declared that the continued presence of EU missions "speaks louder than Russian threats" and demonstrates unwavering solidarity with Ukraine.

Ambassador Mathernová confirmed that all 25 EU member state embassies currently operating in Kyiv will remain open. She cautioned Moscow against violating international law, emphasising that Russia "would be wise not to test the limits" of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations.

Kyiv and Berlin eye LNG deal and EU access to Ukrainian gas storage

Ukrainian and German energy ministers have met to discuss importing liquefied natural gas through German terminal infrastructure.

The talks focused on routing LNG shipments to Ukraine while opening Ukraine’s vast underground storage facilities to European energy companies to help allies buffer against seasonal price shocks as the conflict is widely expected to intensify ahead of winter.

The energy discussions coincide with German chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to Kyiv, where Berlin pledged €350 million specifically designated for emergency repair work on Ukraine's strike-damaged energy grid.

Bosnia votes as Kremlin-backed separatist Dodik looms large over general election

Bosnians have now cast ballots in general elections overshadowed by threats from pro-Moscow Serb nationalist Milorad Dodik to dismantle the state.

Despite being legally barred from office, Dodik – who met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow just days before the vote – remains the central figure of the campaign.

Appearing alongside Russia's ambassador at his final rally in Banja Luka, Dodik declared Bosnia "dead" and an "impossible country," signalling continued Kremlin-backed pushback against the nation's EU and NATO ambitions.

Russian alignment remains a flashpoint as Moscow seeks to maintain a strategic foothold in southeastern Europe through the Serb-majority Republika Srpska.

Turnout stood at just 27 percent by mid-afternoon amid voter disillusionment and technical delays, with Western officials watching closely for potential post-election instability.

Russia sharing jet-drone tech with North Korea, says Zelensky

Ukrainian president Zelensky has stated he believes Russia is transferring advanced jet-powered drone technology to North Korea in exchange for artillery, missiles, and troops.

Moscow has sharply escalated its use of high-speed jet drones against Ukrainian cities in recent weeks, leaving Kyiv struggling to counter the weapons without scrambling combat aircraft.

Asked if Moscow was sharing the underlying technology with Pyongyang, Zelensky confirmed that Russia is providing North Korea with military technologies across multiple domains as payback for its extensive wartime support.

The remarks come amid a growing diplomatic dispute between Kyiv and South Korea.

South Korean president Lee Jae-myung threatened retaliatory measures against Ukraine on Friday, demanding an apology after Zelensky publicly revealed that Ukraine transferred two captured North Korean prisoners of war to Seoul.

Merz pledges €1B aid package during Kyiv visit as Russian strikes hit capital

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz unveiled a €1 billion military aid package and €350 million in energy repairs during a surprise visit to Kyiv, as Russian drone strikes rattled the Ukrainian capital on Sunday.

The unannounced visit saw air-raid sirens blare as Merz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy toured damaged sites, including the Northern Bridge across the Dnipro River.

German defence and energy executives accompanying Merz signed 16 deals worth €6.5 billion, including contracts for IRIS-T air defence missiles, radar systems, and Quantum Systems SPYS jet-powered drone interceptors.

Merz called on Vladimir Putin to end the "senseless war," declaring that Germany "will not be intimidated" and framing Ukraine's defence as vital to European security.

South Korea's Lee accuses Zelensky of making him look like a 'liar'

South Korean leader Lee has accused Ukraine of making him look like “a liar” by contradicting his earlier claim about a non-disclosure agreement with Kyiv.

Lee said on X that Seoul would take “additional measures” if Ukraine refused to admit the existence of the non-disclosure agreement and apologise publicly.

The diplomatic row between South Korea and Ukraine has emerged after Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy appeared to reveal a secret deal in which Kyiv would transfer North Korean prisoners of war to Seoul.

“This is a matter concerning the honour of the Republic of Korea’s people and nation; we cannot overlook it,” Lee said.

How deadlock in the Ukraine war is crippling global food prices

Global food prices could climb by more than nine per cent this year as a deadly escalation between Russia and Ukraine around the Black Sea threatens vital grain exports, analysts have warned.

Ukrainian exports fell an astonishing 75 per cent year-on-year in the first two weeks of August as Russia stepped up its attacks, striking ports more than 70 times in July and early August and hitting vessels on 62 occasions, according to port authorities.

Kyiv says the attacks threaten $40bn in crucial export revenue, worth 1.5 per cent of GDP, while hundreds of millions of people reliant on Ukrainian grain around the world stand to go without.

EU warns situation in Russia-occupied Oleshky is 'appalling'

The situation of civilians in the Russia-occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky is “appalling”, the European Union has warned.

"What is ‌happening in Oleshky, Ukraine, is appalling. Civilians ‌are trapped under ‌siege by Russian forces without access to food, medicine, clean water and basic care,” EU commissioner Hadja Lahbib said yesterday.

“This is unacceptable...Russia, as occupying power, has clear obligations under international humanitarian law: civilians must be protected, and humanitarian assistance must be facilitated," she said.
