Two people have died after a fire broke out aboard a vessel in the Black Sea beyond Romania’s territorial waters, officials confirmed on Monday.

The interior ministry stated that 11 crew members had been rescued from the ship, which was reported to be sinking. Romania's Naval Authority confirmed the vessel involved was the Royad Mammadov.

Authorities have not released details regarding the cause of the fire, and a spokesperson for the naval authority said no further information was available.

Romanian media reported that the ship was Turkish, carrying a cargo of grain, and that the incident occurred near an oil platform operated by energy firm OMV Petrom.

According to tracking site VesselFinder.com, the St Kitts & Nevis-flagged vessel was bound for Ravenna, Italy, having last docked at Izmail in Ukraine.

Romania, a NATO member sharing a 614-km border with Ukraine, has experienced airspace breaches by Russian drones and floating sea mines across trade routes since war began four years ago.
