Harrogate's Historic 'Snowball' Charity Gala Returns for 79th Year

Harrogate Snowball will return to the Old Swan Hotel on

Saturday 5 December 2026. The historic charity event, which began post-WWII in 1947, invites friends, families, and workplace colleagues to kickstart their Christmas celebrations while supporting vulnerable children across the region.

A Tradition Unchanged Since 1947

Founded by Edward Swales at the Astoria Ballroom in Leeds, the Snowball’s core ethos remains completely unchanged after nearly eight decades. The event operates entirely on a non-profit basis, keeping ticket prices low to simply cover operational costs while focusing entirely on gathering gifts for families in deprived areas of North Yorkshire.

Every attendee is asked to bring a brand-new, unwrapped toy to add to the iconic arrival sleigh. The donations are split directly between the Salvation Army and Leeds Children’s Charity, which operates the Lineham Farm sanctuary for disadvantaged young people.

Sally Bickerton, Snowball Committee Chair, commented on the importance of the drive:

Watching the sleigh fill up is sobering and emotional. It’s a reminder of the difference one present can make to a child’s Christmas morning. That’s why we do it every year.

Dinner, Dancing, and H&S Legends

The evening, which runs from 7:00pm until 12:30am, features a three-course dinner, close-up magic from illusionist Simon Hughes, and live music from the band Func on the Rocks. Long-standing patrons will remember the event’s early decades when massive cotton-wool “snowballs” were thrown around the dance floor—a tradition that famously ended when a beer-soaked bundle landed inside a band member’s electric guitar.

Organisers note that with the closure of most traditional nightclubs in the town centre, the gala stands as one of the few remaining local spaces for a classic festive dance night.
