PART of a main road through a York suburb has closed for water repairs.

The westbound side of Front Street in Acomb has closed for the next five days for sewer repair works.

Starting from 8am this morning (October 5), any vehicles will be prohibited from travelling, parking or waiting between the roundabout next to Morrisons and the roundabout with Askham Lane.

Restrictions will apply from 8am on October 5 until 5pm on October 9, or until work finishes, whichever comes first.

A spokesman for City of York Council said: "An alternative route for diverted vehicles will be signed during the works period via Link Road, York Road, The Green, Wetherby Road, Ridgeway, Askham Lane.

"It is envisaged that access for resident and emergency vehicles will be maintained throughout the works period. Traffic signs/barriers will indicate the extent of the prohibition."

They also said that the order does not prohibit works or emergency access nor access nearby premises, provided on-going works aren't in the way.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Water added: "We are carrying out repairs to a damaged sewer. We will work hard to minimise the disruption this causes for local residents and road users."
