New luxury brand set to open in historic shop on Stonegate, York

Plans have gone in to bring a new slow-luxury brand to one of York’s most historic shopping streets.

Norfolk Natural Living is aiming to set up shop at 50 Stonegate. The Grade II* listed building was previously home to the boutique Avatar Jewels.

Founded in 2019, Norfolk Natural Living sells perfumes, wellbeing items and home cleaning products.

The company says all of its products are designed using natural ingredients, which range from pillow mists and body lotions to laundry liquids and dog care items.

Created by Bella Middleton, this will be the brand’s first shop in the north of England.

Norfolk Natural Living is applying for listed building consent for changes to the historic timber-framed building which dates back to around 1600.

According to documents submitted to City of York Council on behalf of applicant Hugo Middleton, the company intends to retain the existing ground-floor retail space without changing its layout.

The proposal focuses purely on refreshing the shopfront joinery. Under the plans, the external timber frame, door frame, pilasters, cornice, and window frames will be repainted.

The current pale sage green and dark green finish will be replaced with Farrow & Ball’s “Book Room Red”, described in the application as a deep, muted brownish-red tone historically associated with traditional shopfront decoration.

The application says no structural work, alterations to windows, or interior remodelling will take place.

All original features, including the glazed door, fanlight with radial glazing bars, display window, and hanging sign bracket, will be retained.
