New outdoor escape room takes players on huge puzzle trail through York

Clueniversity of Magic, created by Solve the City, is transforming York into a magical mystery adventure.

An immersive outdoor escape room is turning the streets of York into a city-wide game board.

Clueniversity of Magic, created by Solve the City, transforms York into a magical mystery adventure, inviting teams of two to six to uncover clues and solve puzzles across a 3km trail through the city centre.

Participants begin at a secret location and are guided by an app through a network of challenges.

Miles, founder of Solve the City, said: "The best moment in any game is spotting something nobody else has noticed, and we've built the whole experience around that feeling.

"York is perfect for it, because there is a detail hidden in plain sight on almost every street.

"The city is the puzzle, and its streets are the game board."

The game is designed to take around two and a quarter hours to complete and can be played during the day, seven days a week.

It combines hands-on puzzles with real props, conversation, and teamwork, encouraging players to engage with the city in fresh and imaginative ways.

Along the route, teams will encounter agents on the ground and discover often-overlooked corners of York.

The experience is suitable for friends, families, and corporate groups, with up to 80 people able to play at once by dividing into smaller teams and racing along different routes.

The company began in Stratford-upon-Avon and now operates in eight UK cities following popular demand.

More than 15,000 people have taken part in their games, and the company has earned a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice award.

Miles said: "What I love most is how the game brings people together.

"Everyone has a part to play, whether that's the grandparent who spots a detail on a building or the teenager who cracks the code.

"We've hosted corporate groups of up to 80 players, and it’s incredibly rewarding to enable people to have fun together."

Clueniversity of Magic can be booked through the Solve the City website at solvethecity.co.uk.
