York's modern buildings are blocking views of the Minster
‘You could be anywhere’ is too often the refrain of my wife and me when driving through York.
Blocky student accommodation, hotels, offices and developments often dominate an area. I suppose it says it on the tin really; blocks tend to block!
York has suffered a serious outbreak of ‘Legotitis’! So I agree with the September 28th Press lead letter ‘What’s wrong with York’s modern buildings?’ from Michael Wickens.
Out of York, on higher ground such as Garrowby Hill, Whitwell Hill, White Horse area and Terrington Bank, on a clear day you can see York with the dominant Minster clearly visible.
Move into York and views of the Minster from pavement level are often restricted, spoiled and interrupted or, depending on location, direction and perspective; blocked ((that’s a surprise; the words ‘level’ and ‘pavement’ linked in relation to York, albeit vice versa).
The visual corridors for catching a glimpse of York’s greatest architectural treasure are too often compromised outside the immediate city centre, with intrusive blocks ‘muscling in’.
Mind you I don’t know how you get round this ‘medium rise’ problem; above my pay grade! The fact remains, in too many parts of York ‘you could be anywhere’.

Why not spend fines on fixing the problem?
South West Water Co. along with many others have recently been fined very large amounts of money for dumping polluted water in many parts of England, but how do massive fines help anyone?
All the water companies make money and the shareholders keep getting dividends and the CEOs receive huge salaries, none of which are deserved.
Why not sack (get rid) of all the hopeless CEOs and managers and force by Government supervision all these polluting companies to spend the amount of the fines upgrading their old, inefficient, crumbling infrastructure? The sooner our Government take over all the utilities the better.
Margaret Thatcher’s biggest error was in privatising most of the UK’s utilities.

York’s cashless parking system needs fixing
Parking in York is difficult at the best of times. But when I tried to park in Cromwell Road to help a friend collect his recently-deceased wife’s ashes from the Coop Funeral Director’s, the ubiquitous Pay By Phone app said there was a poor network connection even though my phone showed a very strong signal.
Why do some apps always default to a failure by the user when the app itself is at fault?
If City of York Council wants us to park cashless, then it must make sure its partner apps actually work where they are supposed to.
