Updated: York bridge reopens after teenager brought to safety

A police incident closed a York bridge tonight (Saturday).

There was a large emergency services presence on Ouse Bridge.

Several police vehicles, at least two ambulances and a fire engine went to the scene.

York Rescue Boat was in the water underneath Ouse Bridge.

The bridge was taped off from close to the stairs next to the Tank and Paddle pub.

Road users coming into the city centre were being diverted down Skeldergate or North Street. Pedestrians are being directed towards Lendal Bridge.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said the incident involved concern for the safety of a teenager.

They later issued this update: “Thank you for your patience and understanding tonight, while we dealt with an incident in York city centre.

“We received a report of concern for the welfare of a teenage girl on Ouse Bridge at 7pm. Emergency services attended immediately and the road was closed.

“A short time ago she was brought to safety and arrangements were made for the support she needs.”
