Crowds have gathered in Houghton-le-Spring as the annual feast gets underway with colour, music and family entertainment.

Houghton Feast has returned, and it's filling the town with noise, crowds, and all the fun of the fair.

The 10-day festival is bringing together residents, families, visitors and community groups to celebrate the unique heritage, culture and spirit of Houghton.

This year’s event features the traditional fairground, ox roasting, carnival parade and fireworks, along with a full programme of community events, exhibitions, talks and tours.

The festival began with an opening ceremony on The Broadway, followed by the grand switch-on of the Houghton Feast illuminations by the Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Robert Hutchinson.

On Saturday, the community carnival parade will bring colour and energy to the streets, featuring brass bands, dancers, costumed characters, floats and classic vehicles along Newbottle Street.

Monday night will see the return of the ever-popular fireworks display, which can be viewed from Durham Road from 7pm.
