Major progress has been made on a new 59-bedroom hotel in Bishop Auckland town centre, with the building now taking shape.

New pictures show the latest work on the Northside Hotel in the Market Place, where construction has moved on significantly in recent weeks.

The three-storey building is now largely enclosed, with windows installed across much of the development and work continuing on the roof.

It marks a major change from earlier this year, when the first sections of steel were only beginning to rise from the site.

The hotel is being built on the former site of the Queens Head, Postchaise and Monaco buildings, which were demolished last year.

Once complete, the Northside Hotel will have 59 bedrooms, as well as a bar, restaurant and parking.

The development is expected to create around 95 jobs.

Plans for the hotel were approved by Durham County Council last year as part of wider regeneration work in Bishop Auckland.

The scheme is backed by more than £3 million and is expected to contribute around £4.7 million a year to the local economy.

It forms part of efforts to increase the number of people visiting and staying in Bishop Auckland, alongside other regeneration projects across the town centre.

Work remains ongoing, with the exterior of the building still to be completed.
