Motorists face months of disruption on the A1(M) in County Durham and North Yorkshire as temporary speed limits and overnight closures are introduced.

The restrictions are part of a major 23-week maintenance programme.

Work on the A1(M) and A66 will include replacing safety barriers and signs, cutting trees, clearing sites and resurfacing roads.

The programme will start at 8pm on Monday, October 5, and last 23 weeks or until the work is finished.

A National Highways notice sets out the full extent of the disruption.

Drivers will face 50mph or 40mph speed limits on sections of the A1(M) around the clock during parts of the work.

The northbound limit will run from 768 metres south of Junction 56, Barton Interchange, to the entry slip road at Junction 59, Aycliffe Interchange - a distance of 16,800 metres.

Southbound restrictions will run from 30 metres north of Lime Lane overbridge to 768 metres south of Junction 56’s entry slip road, also covering 16,800 metres.

Both directions’ entry and exit slip roads at Junctions 56, 58 (Burtree) and 59 will also have restrictions.

The northbound exit and southbound entry slip roads at Junction 57, Blackwell Spur, will also be affected.

The northbound carriageway between Junctions 56 and 59 will close overnight from 8pm to 6am during parts of the work, covering 15,800 metres.

The southbound carriageway between Junctions 59 and 56 will also close from 8pm to 6am during parts of the work, covering 15,800 metres.

The slip roads listed above will also close overnight.

Lay-bys beside the A66 will also close around the clock from 8pm on Monday, October 5, 2026, until the work ends.

The closures include a lay-by 13,800 metres west of Scotch Corner Roundabout on the eastbound carriageway and one 555 metres east of Blands Corner Roundabout westbound.

Clearly marked alternative routes will be available during the closures.

The restrictions will not apply to emergency service or special forces vehicles. The closures will not apply to emergency vehicles, vehicles involved in the work, winter maintenance vehicles or traffic officer vehicles.
