York has been ranked among the areas with the oldest business founders in Yorkshire and the Humber.
A new study by Virtual HQ, which looked at company formation data from Companies House between August 2025 and July 2026, found that 6.6 per cent of newly appointed directors in York were over the age of 60.
This places York third in the region for the highest proportion of older founders, behind only North Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire.
Andrew Manning, managing director at Virtual HQ, said: "Setting up a limited company has never been quicker or cheaper, and these figures show how many people are now doing it in their early twenties rather than waiting until mid-career.
"For anyone setting up a business, it's important to remember that incorporating puts you on a public register.
"Every director has to provide a service address that anyone can look up, and for a young founder working from a bedroom or a university flat, that means their home address is searchable by customers, suppliers and anyone else who cares to check.
"It is one of the easiest things to get right at the start and one of the most awkward to unpick later, so it is worth a few minutes' thought before the application goes in."
The median age of company founders in York was 42, three years above the national average of 39.
By comparison, nearby Bradford recorded the youngest founders in the region, with a median age of 36 and 14.1 per cent of company directors under 25.
The study also revealed that North Yorkshire had the highest share of over-60 founders at 10.2 per cent, followed by East Riding of Yorkshire at 8.2 per cent.
Of the 1,285 new company founders in York, 85 were over the age of 60.
