More than £3,000 has been raised for the family of a much-loved teenager who tragically died when an Audi plunged into Sunderland's River Wear.

Shortly before 1.30pm on Tuesday, police received a number of reports from the public of a black Audi A3 car coming off the road at Panns Bank near Wearmouth Bridge and entering the water.

Jackson Duke, 17, Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw, both 16, were in the car and died in the crash.

Jackson Duke, 17, and Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw, both aged 16, were all in the car at that time.

Since then, tributes have been pouring in for the teenagers, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to help Jackson Duke's family cover funeral costs.

Since creating the fundraiser yesterday (October 1), £3,390 has already been raised with 169 donations.

Organiser Norma Thoms said: "We are asking for your help following the heartbreaking and sudden loss of a much-loved 17-year-old, Jackson Duke who tragically passed away following a terrible accident as many of you will have seen on social media and the news these past few days.

"No family should ever have to face the unimaginable pain of losing their child, especially so suddenly and at such a young age. His family are now having to cope with an enormous amount of grief while also facing the financial pressure that comes with arranging a funeral and everything else that follows such a devastating loss.

"We are setting up this fundraiser to help take some of that financial pressure away from his family during this incredibly difficult time. Every donation, no matter how small, will go towards helping with funeral costs and other expenses the family are now facing, allowing them to focus on grieving, supporting one another and remembering their son.

"If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser. Your support, kind words and messages mean more than you could imagine to a family going through such an unimaginable loss.

"Thank you to everyone who takes the time to donate, share or simply show their support during this heartbreaking time."

In a statement, Hebburn Town Juniors said: "It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the devastating news of the passing of Jackson Duke, a much-loved member of Hebburn Town Juniors and one of our U18 players.
